Morning Prayer 2022 Day 65

Holy God,

As we navigate life, we often think about giving up things we love - chocolate, social media, sugar, sodas - comforts. While these are all temptations of a sort for us, thinking about the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness makes them feel a little silly.

Lord, temptations are real, but with the world’s new way of talking about them, their realness is often lost on us.

I am tempted to point out the failures of others.

I am tempted to put myself last.

I am tempted to spend too much money on things that serve as bandaids to true joy.

I am tempted to withhold generosity from those in true need out of a mindset of scarcity.

I am tempted to believe and share gossip that harms others or divides our communities.

I am tempted to believe that I know better for myself than you do - and I am tempted to act on those assumptions daily.

Lord, in this wilderness of life, as we journey together yet feel alone at times, make the real temptations, the ones that keep me from seeing you, make them a siren in my heart. Give me the love and strength to turn from them and call on you in their place. Remain close.

Amen
