Morning Prayer 2022 Day 48

God of Life and Peace,

“To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit[g] is life and peace.”

When I read texts like the lesson for today, it is easy to allow my mind to tangle it into the messages of the world that want me to spend countless hours each week getting thinner, or stronger, or fitter, or prettier. There are images of beauty and perfection all around. Images that have been brushed and touched up and Lord, in all seriousness it makes it hard not to consider the word flesh for what it means in the world today. While Paul meant it a bit differently, it still has this power over us to allow judgment - unkind - harsh judgment of ourselves and others. This certainly can feel like a death of our self-esteem and self-love.

Oh God. I long to see myself as you see me. Good. I long to see myself as beloved.

There are glimpses of seeing myself as beloved, moments, but they seem fleeting. Help me see them, feel them, and hold on to them, Lord. Hold me in those moments.

Help me set my mind on the Spirit so that life and peace come in waves, nourishing my soul. Open my heart to your grace.

Amen
